Product Details

Thomson continuous supports can be purchased as shaft and rail assemblies. Support Rail Assemblies come with the shaft and shaft support mounted together.

The shaft material in the assembly can be selected from our standard shaft materials:
  • Standard steel
  • 440C or 316 Stainless steel
  • Chrome plated steel
  • Tubular
The support material depends on which style of support is selected.  See below for more information.

The Support Rail Assemblies come in several styles
  • Standard (SRA)
  • Extra Rigid (XSRA)
  • Side mount (SSRA)
  • Low profile (LSRA)
  • Undermount Low Profile (ULSRA)
Continuous supports are for use with open style linear bearings.  Units with "M" in the part number contain metric shafting and are for use with metric diameter bushings.

Standard Support

The standard Support Rail Assemblies (SRA) are the most commonly used support rail assembly.  It utilizes an aluminum support that has through mounting holes in the flange.

Standard Support

Extra-rigid Support

Extra-rigid Support Rail Assemblies (XSRA) utilize a ductile iron support that is powder coated. XSRAs are designed for use with extra-rigid series linear ball bushing bearings and are the most deflection resistant shaft support option. XSRAs are available in 2 or 3 inch diameter shaft sizes only.  They have counterbored mounting holes in the flange.  XSRAs are designed for use with XR ball bushing bearings.

Side Support

Side Support Rail Assemblies (SSRA) have the mounting surface on the side.  The mounting flange is made of aluminum and has counter bored through mounting holes.

Side Support

Low profile Support

Low Support Rail Assemblies (LSRA) are compact shaft supports that are 40% lower in height than standard support rail assemblies. LSRAs utilize a steel support.  The counter bored mounting holes are through the shaft from the top.  The bolts that hold the assembly together are installed from the factory.  They are spaced at intervals between the mounting holes and are also from the top of the shaft.

With the top mounting holes in the shaft, this assembly is only for use with Super Smart ball bushing bearings. Super Smarts have the tracks evenly spaced around the diameter with no bearing tracks at the top. The holes in the top of the LSRA could be in the path of the other linear bearings’ ball tracks.   A low support rail assembly without the mounting holes in the top is available.  See the Under-mount Low profile Support Rail Assemblies (ULSRA).

Low support assembly uses special Predrilled shafting with through counterbored holes.

Low profile Support

Under-mount Low profile Support

Under-mount Low profile Support Rail Assemblies (ULSRA) are the same as LSRAs except with bottom mounting holes.  This assembly would bolt from the bottom into the threaded holes in the predrilled shafting. There are no holes in the top of this assembly and therefore could be used with linear bearings that have ball tracks in the top.  PBO style pillow blocks (precision steel pillow blocks) are not suitable for use with ULSRA's due to clearance issues.

Note that the shafting used with this assembly is pre-drilled shafting with threaded holes. While the Low support assembly uses special Predrilled shafting with through counterbored holes.
