The synchronization option, available with Thomson Electrak HD linear actuators, enables Spika Design and Manufacturing to offer their customers work platforms with improved performance, functionality and safety.
What is smart actuation and how can your applications benefit from it? Håkan Persson, the Global Product Line Director for Actuators at Thomson, walks you through the makings of a smart electric actuator, its integrated electronics, where it is best applied and three Thomson actuator families offering these solutions.

Customer ServiceStroke Length is defined as the distance that the actuator will move a load. Other common words used to describe this are “travel” or “throw.”
Maximum Rated Dynamic Load represents the maximum thrust the actuator is capable of providing in order to move a load.
Speed at Maximum Load defines the travel rate of the actuator when moving the maximum rated load.
The input voltage of the actuator is what provides power to the motor to move the actuator.
The Feedback or Control option dictates what device(s) the actuator will use to provide feedback signals, or what control architecture the actuator will use to provide that feedback throughout its stroke.
Duty Cycle is defined as a percentage of on-time vs. the total time of use (including rest time between movements). Formulaically, it can be defined as Time On divided by Time Off + Time On.
Typically, Thomson actuators are designed for dirty outdoor environments. This may include some rain, dust, with hot and cold temperatures. The best way to condense this information into something applicable for the end user is by giving the product an IP (or ingress protection) rating. This will detail the amount of dirt and water that the actuator can withstand while providing its rated performance.
The maximum ambient temperature at which the actuator will provide its rated performance.
The minimum ambient temperature at which the actuator will provide its rated performance.
Overload Protection defines the type of device used to prevent the actuator from stalling and potentially damaging itself when encountering an overload during movement.
Stroke End Protection defines the type of device used to prevent the actuator from stalling and potentially damaging itself when reaching the end of travel.
A manual override is a direct access to the actuator’s gearing to provide movement of the extension tube without powering the motor.
This defines the mounting interface between the actuator and the structure it is moving or attached to on the extension tube.
This defines the mounting interface between the actuator and the structure it is moving or attached to on the rear housing.
Anti-rotation is defined as a device to prevent rotational movement of the extension tube, which will extend or retract the actuator without gear movement. This is especially useful when utilizing a potentiometer feedback device, which can become disassociated with the stroke of the actuator if the tube is extended by rotating it without powering the gearing.
This defines the general grouping of Thomson Linear Actuator products.
Actuator wiring harnesses have a variety of connectors to interface the motor and feedback devices with a power supply and/or control.
