Thomson has over 70 years of ball screw and lead screw support and offers both metric and imperial options, outperforming other actuation methods. Compared to bulky, noisy and expensive hydraulic or pneumatic actuator systems, Thomson ball screws and lead screws are compact, quiet and very affordable. In addition, there’s no need for pumps, hoses, fluids or shop air, eliminating many fire, safety and health hazards.
Thomson precision rolling machines ensure accurate positioning to 0.003 in/ft, and our PTFE coating process produces ball screw assemblies that have less drag torque, extending performance life. All of our standard plastic ball screw nut assemblies use an internally lubricated Acetal, providing excellent lubricity and wear resistance with or without additional lubrication. For significantly higher loads, ball screws with standard bronze nuts use SAE 660 bearing bronze, which provides high load capacity with good PV performance.
Metric Series lead screws is offered in diameter-lead options of 10 x 2 mm to 24 x 5 mm handling dynamic loads up to 750 N (500 kN static). The metric series lead screw assures accuracies to 250 micron/300mm on standard models (75 micron/300mm precision models) with zero to .025mm backlash capability.
Inch Series lead screws come in diameter-lead options of 3/16” x .05” to 3” x 1/4” handling dynamic loads up to 400 lbs (114,000 lbs static). The inch series lead screw can assure accuracies to .010 in/ft on standard models (.003”/ft precision models) with zero to .010” backlash capability.
Thomson ball screws and lead screws differ in design, quality, materials, manufacturing and application support, all factors that affect performance and extend life. Both our ball screws and lead screws come in a full range of diameters, leads and ball nut configurations, in either preloaded or non-preloaded types, all in industry-standard envelopes.
Inch Precision Rolled and Precision Plus Ground ball screws come in a variety of designs and have a diameter (lead) range from .187” to 4.0” (.05” to 2.0”). We provide Ball screw accuracies of ±.0005 in/ft with up to zero backlash options are available.
